The Vaal University of Technology (VUT) intends to develop a new teacher education building at their Educity campus in Sebokeng, Gauteng Province. The proposed site is located on Portion 28 of the farm Quaggasfontein. The land was originally zoned for agricultural use and therefore subdivision and re-zoning of the property was required in order to proceed with the proposed development.
The project comprised the following elements:
The new teacher education building accommodates 500 students, 30 staff members and 100 visitors (who occupy the ground floor during conferences). The total floor space is estimated to be about 2 700 m2 and the site was considered a greenfield site as no previous construction had taken place. A municipal pipeline traverses the site which was considered in the design.
The new building is defined by two individual structures which have been merged to create a stylised L-shape. The building is a four-storey structure where the one wing serves as an educational space, including lecture rooms and a computer laboratory. The other wing serves as an administrative space, including offices, a staff canteen, storerooms and ablution facilities.
